First Impressions
At first glance, the game mirrors the original except, naturally, they’ve been upgraded and are beautifully done. The setting is a tropical jungle with vines, waterfalls, and Aztec ruins framing the board. As the Aztec-themed symbols tumble out, you can just make out a golden pyramid in El Dorado, which probably houses the 20,000x max bet you’re spinning for.
Key Features
Players can expect a tonne of features that make for interesting gameplay. In classic Megaways fashion, all winning combinations tumble out of the board in an Avalanche, making way for new symbols. This gives you the chance to get repeat wins from a single spin. The exception lies with Unbreakable Wilds. These land randomly on the reels and stay on even if they form part of a winning combination.
Another great feature tied to the gameplay is the Avalanche Multiplier. With each win that tumbles out of the board, a Multiplier is added for up to x5. The Earthquake feature is also on hand to help you get bigger wins by randomly shaking the board, crumbling all low-paying symbols to make room for high-paying symbols that take up their spot.
Yet the best feature by far, and the one that will net you the epic win most players are vying for, is Free Fall. Players need to land 3 or more Free Fall symbols (or 2 Free Fall symbols plus a wild symbol to substitute the 3rd). These award you with 9 Free Spins, with each additional Free Fall symbol in the combo adding an extra 3 Free Spins. During Free Fall, the Avalanche Multipliers are maxed out to up to 15x. Final Thoughts
There’s plenty to enjoy on this Gonzo makeover. The gameplay is smooth, the graphics crisp, the action plentiful. The only shortcoming is that the slot’s high volatility can make gameplay repetitive until you land a decent win. Plus, we also think the designers could have gone for a more innovative approach compared to the original. For example, the soundtrack could have done with an update as the tribal beats and insect trills can become quite repetitive.
With that said, this updated version is close enough to the original to become a new favourite if you loved the original Gonzo slot. Plus, the high stakes and great features certainly make it worth checking out and trying your luck on.
