The expansion of the “Game of Thrones” universe might include a new animated series in early development at HBO Max…

HBO has big plans for the “Game of Thrones” universe including a potential animated series.

Early development has started on an adult-oriented animated series that would possibly end up on HBO Max as part of the network’s ever expanding “Game of Thrones” spinoffs after the original series ended in 2019.

According to the initial report from the Hollywood Reporter, the animated series is just now starting to gain interest with HBO as a search for potential writers has started but there’s no guarantee this would ever see the light of day.

HBO has started to plan a massive expansion of the “Game of Thrones” property with the launch of the first spinoff series “House of the Dragon” planned for 2022 and a second series based on “The Tales of Dunk and Egg” novels currently in the works as well.

“House of the Dragon” will chronicle the epic Targaryen civl war known as “The Dance of Dragons,” which is based upon the George R.R. Martin book “Fire and Blood.” That novel told the history of House Targaryen including the civil war that was also referenced during “Game of Thrones.”

As for “The Tales of Dunk and Egg” — that series is also in early development at HBO Max based on a trio of stories written by Martin that detailed the journeys of a legendary hedge knight named Duncan the Tall and his young squire “Egg,” who is actually Aegon V Targaryen, a future king who sits on the Iron Throne.

There are numerous other potential series in the works at HBO after the network had previously shot a pilot for a series that was rumored to feature the first appearance of the White Walkers centered around a dark period of Westeros history called “The Long Night.” That series starring Naomi Watts was eventually scrapped after the pilot episode was shot.

HBO then turned attention towards “House of the Dragon,” which has already been picked up to series with a debut date expected in 2022. That show is expected to air on HBO as well as stream on HBO Max.

There’s no word on what story the animated series might tell, although there’s a lot of possibilities based on the vast world crafted by Martin from his “A Song of Ice and Fire” series of books not to mention the “Fire and Blood” novel as well as “The World of Ice and Fire,” which serves as an encyclopedia of sorts that talks about the entire history of the Known World created by the author.

As WarnerMedia continues to invest more and more into HBO Max, the company has started to develop additional series surrounding intellectual property they either own or have licensed. There have been rumors about a potential Harry Potter series and now numerous “Game of Thrones” series are also in development.

Martin also has a rich overall deal at HBO, which means all of the series based around “Game of Thrones” would remain at the network.

Stay tuned for more details as they become available as HBO begins building an even bigger universe surrounding “Game of Thrones” in 2021 and beyond.
