Gina Carano has been fired from her role as ex-Rebel shock trooper Cara Dune on “The Mandalorian.”
On Wednesday, Lucasfilm confirmed the former mixed martial artist turned actress was no longer part of the “Star Wars” spinoff series following a series of controversial posts on social media culminating in one particular message shared on Instagram, which compared the plight of conservatives in America to the massacre of Jews during the holocaust in Nazi Germany.
“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” a Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement released to the media. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”
Carano starred during both seasons of “The Mandalorian” and there were rumors that she was also expected to have a featured role in the upcoming series “Rangers of the New Republic” prior to her firing.
The post made on Carano’s Instagram account was later deleted but here’s the text of the message she shared to her 1.5 million followers:
“Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”
Of course, Carano has skirted controversy previously based on her social media posts, which included numerous messages speaking out against masks worn during the coronavirus pandemic, questioning the results of the 2020 Presidential Election and Joe Biden’s victory over Donald Trump as well as a past incident where she mocked the use of gender pronouns such as “she/her/hers” when she changed her Twitter profile to say “boop/bop/beep.”
While those past social media posts led to a trending topic on Twitter with the hashtag #FireGinaCarano, Disney and Lucasfilm didn’t take any action but the latest message shared has seemingly cost Carano her job.
In the wake of her controversial posts, Carano was also dropped by her talent agents at UTA.
“The Mandalorian” has already been renewed for a third season on Disney+ with production on the series expected to start later this year.
