“Supergirl” will hang up her cape for the last time with the upcoming sixth season planned for the CW in 2021…
“Supergirl” is coming to an end.
The upcoming sixth season of the long running CW series will be the last with filming expected to start on the final 20 episodes later this year. The final season is expected to debut in 2021, although it will be delayed partially due to series star Melissa Benoist about to give birth to her first child.
Originally conceived as a series for CBS, “Supergirl” shifted to the CW after its freshman season as the show joined a robust DC Comics TV universe including “Arrow” and “The Flash.”
Benoist led the show from the beginning with a cast that also included Chyler Leigh, David Harewood and Katie McGrath. In recent seasons, the “Supergirl” cast grew to welcome Nicole Maines to the show as she portrayed the first ever transgender superhero on television with her character Nia Nal aka Dreamer.
After news of “Supergirl” coming to an end, Benoist released a heartfelt message on social media as she prepares to say goodbye to a character she’s played since 2015.
“To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement,” Benoist wrote. “Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless.
“She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful. I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season.”
Maines also took to social media to express her admiration for a show that ultimately became about inclusion as much as it ever was about superheroes and super villains.
“While I’m sad that this must come to an end, I am beyond happy and proud,” Maines wrote. “I am proud that I have been privileged enough to be able to bring Nia Nal to life, and to have been able to be a part of her evolution into Dreamer.
“She has meant so much to so many, and it has been my complete honor to get to play her for the past few years. And though she was created especially for Supergirl, I think we can all agree that we haven’t seen the last of her, and I cannot wait to see where she pops up next.”
“Supergirl” is the latest DC show on the CW to come to an end after “Arrow” drew the final curtain earlier this year on the series that launched the entire universe on the network.
The final season of “Supergirl” will get 20 total episodes and it’s entirely possible that characters from the show could still make appearances on other CW series with a typical crossover planned every year. Look for the final season of “Supergirl” to debut sometime in 2021.
