Finding a great name for your kid from a popular book or TV series is nothing new, but the latest fad as a whole lot of people using a title from ‘Game of Thrones’ that might be a little confusing….
On ‘Game of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen is known by many names including ‘The Mother of Dragons’ but the most popular nickname she’s received over the years is ‘Khaleesi’, which essentially means queen in Dothraki. She got the title after marrying Khal Drogo as he was leading the horde of Dothraki warriors while he was serving as their king (thus the title Khal).
But now in a strange trend that at least causes us to scratch our collective heads, 146 people in 2012 (according to the Social Security Administration) named their child Khaleesi after hearing the title in ‘Game of Thrones’. During the same time span, only 21 people actually named their child Daenerys, which is the name of the actual character in the show.
Maybe we’re crazy, but isn’t naming your kid Khaleesi the equivalent of naming them ‘Queen’ or ‘Princess’?
It seems a bit odd, but maybe these folks just love the sound of the name Khaleesi. Then again, I’m betting at least a few of them think that is her first name. Anybody wanna place bets?
