Good news for all of the fans of the upcoming Avengers films because actor Robert Downey Jr. will still be filling Tony Stark’s famous shoes for at least two more movies.
The news was released on Thursday confirmed that Downey had signed a new two picture deal with Marvel Studios to portray the “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” in the next two Avengers sequels.
The new deal did not include Downey’s participation in a fourth Iron Man sequel however.
The positive side of this information, however, is the revelation that Downey will take part in the next two Avengers films, which will in all likelihood open with huge numbers when they make it to theaters.
Director and writer Joss Whedon is busy at work on the Avengers 2 script currently, and just recently said in an interview with the Daily Beast that the sequel just wouldn’t go forward without Downey’s involvement.
He is Iron Man. He is Iron Man in the way that Sean Connery was James Bond. I have no intention of making Avengers 2 without him, nor do I think I’ll be called upon to do that. I don’t think it’s in my interest, Marvel’s interest, or his interest, and I think everything will be fine. But I know that this is Hollywood and you roll with things. You have to be ready for the unexpected. But I loved working with Robert, and everybody knows he embodied that role in a way no one else can.
The film is expected to start production in May 2014 with Avengers 2 landing in theaters the following May in 2015. The first Avengers film grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide, so the expectations are high for the second movie as well.
At 48-years of age, Downey will likely take home two of the biggest paydays in Hollywood history for returning to the role of Tony Stark. He reportedly earned $50 million for his part in the first Avengers movie, so this new two picture deal could reach well over $100 million in total salary.
