She speaks German, comes from a musical family, enjoys home remodeling, and has adopted 2 beautiful children called Louis and Laila. Sandra Bullock has been a stable name in Hollywood for decades, and rightfully so. Bullock’s movies have grossed almost $5 billion globally, making her one of the most respectable acting figures in the world.
Her latest movie The Lost City, in which she’s starring alongside Channing Tatum, was released this year, and Bullock shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. With almost 50 movies up her sleeve, this article brings our selection of the most iconic Sandra Bullock movies to date.
The Heat (2013)
In this action-packed comedy, Sandra Bullock stars alongside Melissa McCarthy, who is mostly known for her comedy-infused roles. Bullock’s character, an FBI agent on a mission to take down a drug lord, must team up with McCarthy’s character, a local cop, if she wants to successfully complete her mission.
However, the two characters couldn’t be more different, and the whole comedy is built on the interactions between the two characters. Their dialogues are incredibly funny, their dynamics is flawless, and the whole script just works really well.
Speed (1994)
No matter how old you are, chances are you’ve seen this classic playing on TV at some point in your life. The premise of the movie is simple: a bomb is attached under a bus full of passengers commuting in the streets of Los Angeles and should that bus go slower than 50mph, the bomb will explode.
Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock are the heroes of the story as they try to save the people inside the bus. The movie launched both actors into the Hollywood elite and received great reviews among both viewers and critics. Full of suspense and anticipation, Speed is a proper action movie you have to see at least once in your lifetime. There’s also a Speed 2 (1997) available, so get your popcorn and dive in.
Bird Box (2018)
Bird Box was a massive hit when it first came out on Netflix. Nearly a year after the movie’s release, it has been seen by more than 80 million subscribers, which accounted for roughly 50% of Netflix’s subscribers at the time. In this sci-fi/horror movie, you can’t look at the creatures that have wiped out a big portion of the population because if you do, you die. The premise of the movie was extremely fresh and new at the time, which might explain some of its popularity.
Bird Box was responsible for the big surge of new Netflix subscriptions when it came out, which, in combination with Netflix’s free one month trial, a marketing move similar to no deposit bonuses of online casinos or new-customer cash bonuses of banking institutions, proved to have a very successful outcome for the streaming giant. The movie made a big fuzz around the world, and Bullock’s respectable performance means Bird Box deserves a place on our list.
Miss Congeniality (2000)
In this truly iconic movie that meant yet another FBI character for Bullock, agent Gracie Hart must go under cover to become a contestant on a Miss United States competition in order to save the Miss United States pageant. The only problem is that Hart and femininity are complete antonyms.
This results in 109 minutes of hilarious action comedy that has many flaws and stereotypes but somehow works extremely well. Adored by masses, Miss Congeniality even got a sequel in 2005. Unfortunately, it didn’t reach the same popularity as the first installment, with Bullock even saying the sequel shouldn’t have been done in the first place.
The Blind Side (2009)
When a homeless Black teenager gets adopted by a white picture-perfect family after years of being in and out of the foster care system, his life takes an unexpected turn. After Leigh Anne (Sandra Bullock) and her husband see Michael, a 17-year-old homeless teenager, cold and alone on the street, they decide to take him in for the night. One night turn into two, and two turn into a decision that forever changes all of their lives for the better.
Based on a true story, the movie is an emotional ride full of beautiful interactions between Sandra’s character and the adopted boy. Apart from heartfelt moments, the movie is a perfect reminder of what truly matters in life: family, security, and gratitude. Bullock delivers a performance of her lifetime, which has even earned her an Oscar win.
Gravity (2013)
Alfonso Cuarón is the mastermind behind this science-fiction thriller from the outer space. After two American astronauts, portrayed by Bullock and George Clooney, are left stranded in space after their space shuttle is destroyed by a meteor shower, they must find a way to get back to Earth before it’s too late.
The movie was especially challenging to shoot for Bullock, who was surrounded in isolation with the film crew for the majority of the shoot, with Clooney having appeared on the set only for about three weeks. Gravity is a spectacular watch, and Bullock delivers an admirable performance.
