The creators behind ‘Stranger Things’ have revealed a few new details for the upcoming second season due out on Oct. 27 on Netflix…
The countdown has started with only a month left to go until ‘Stranger Things’ season 2 finally arrives on Netflix.
The Duffer brothers — Matt and Ross — have to stay fairly tight lipped when it comes to any details surrounding the highly anticipated second season of the surprise hit show, but in a new story with Entertainment Weekly, they revealed a few new things to look forward to when ‘Stranger Things’ returns.
First and foremost — this is not technically the second season of ‘Stranger Things’ as odd as that might sound.
Instead, the Duffer brothers have formatted their story so that each installment of ‘Stranger Things’ will serve as a sequel to the previous season. It’s a minor detail but something they specifically requested when discussing the new season with Netflix.
“When we started describing it as a sequel, Netflix was like, ‘Don’t do that, because sequels are known to be bad,’ ” Matt said. “I was like, ‘Yes, but what about T2 and Aliens and Toy Story 2 and Godfather II?’ ”
That’s why in all marketing materials nothing says ‘Stranger Things’ season 2 but instead just ‘Stranger Things 2’.
As far as the plot goes for ‘Stranger Things’, the first season was mainly focused on the search for Will Byers after he was taken into the Upside Down alternate dimension and his friends ultimately battling the Demogorgon monster that emerged from that evil, dark place.
In ‘Stranger Things 2’, the friends will encounter a brand new monster that is haunting Will as he’s still experiencing some sort of post traumatic stress after being trapped in the Upside Down for so long. The creature Will finds in those visions is called the ‘shadow monster’ and it sounds even more ominous than the Demogorgon from the first season.
“It’s all connected to this singular threat, which is tied into this shape that Will sees in the sky,” says Ross.
There will be several new characters introduced in ‘Stranger Things 2’ including Bob — played by Sean Astin — who will be a new love interest for Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) during the nine-episode run.
The Duffer brothers also teased that the second installment of ‘Stranger Things’ is action packed with plenty of riveting moments from each episode to the next.
“Each episode is building on the last one. It gets much crazier than it ever got in season 1,” Matt said
The second season will also address Barb’s death despite Shannon Purser not returning to ‘Stranger Things’. Instead the fallout will be with those closest to her, including Barb’s parents who are obviously devastated after losing their daughter.
Of course the most daunting task beyond any plot details or new characters being added is ‘Stranger Things’ maintaining the same level of quality in the second season after fans went crazy for the original installment.
The Duffer brothers hope that ‘Stranger Things 2’ is not only a great addition to the series but ultimately fans will be left debating whether the second installment was possibly better than the first.
“The love for this show is so rabid.” Matt said. “We want people to argue about what season is better. I want the debate. I want the Toy Story debate!”
‘Stranger Things 2’ will debut on Netflix on Friday, Oct. 27 with all nine episodes debuting that day.
