Amazon Prime
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: 40th Anniversary Edition (1974)
This is a true horror classic! Based somewhat on true events, five teenagers find themselves being hunted by a twisted family of cannibals in Tobe Hooper’s horror masterpiece. This re-released, anniversary edition features a 4K digital transfer and all-new surround sound mix.
The Girl with all the Gifts (2017)
It’s actually best to watch this movie without knowing too many details. So, you may want to skip the trailer. This zombie drama has a stellar cast, including Glenn Close, Gemma Arterton, and Paddy Considine, and is a bit of a “thinker” with a unique approach compared to the typical zombie virus movie. It still has some action and gory zombie attack scenes, but it also makes you question who deserves our sympathy.
Pet Sematary (1989)
• Also available on Hulu Plus
If you’re on a Stephen King binge or craving a true 80s movie, then this is movie will fill your needs. Based on the best-selling novel by King, in this movie the Creed family learns that there are dangerous consequences to tampering with forces beyond life and death.
Hulu
The Amityville Horror (1979)
Hulu is a great source for classic horror movies and thrillers, including this classic based upon a supposed true story of a family whose dream house turns into a haunting nightmare. This heart pounding, paranormal thriller has inspired many recent movies through the decades.
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
If action horror is more your thing, then this movie from Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez will get you amped up and ready to stake some vamps. It stars Tarantino himself and George Clooney as brothers on the run from the law, until they pick the wrong place to hide and have to fight for their very survival. The movie spawned a successful TV series, expanding on the story of the two brothers, and is also available online to watch.
The Monster Squad (1987)
For something that’s a bit like “The Goonies meets Stranger Things,” check out The Monster Squad. This 80s cult classic has a good balance of action and humor, uniting a rag tag team of kids to save their town and the world from the evil of Dracula and his team of classic monsters The Mummy, The Wolf Man, and more.
Netflix
The Babysitter (2017)
This Netflix Original movie is entertaining and campy with some over-the-top, graphic violence, and an evil, but simple-minded, satanic cult of teenagers who will do anything to finish off young protagonist Cole who is fighting for his life. It’s a scary, adrenaline-rush with a slight 80s coming of age movie vibe.
Beyond the Gates (2016)
This indie movie won the audience award at the L.A. Film Festival’s midnight section. This unique take on sci fi-horror drama focuses on two brothers who reunite because their father has gone missing with a creepy nod to 80s VHS games. Then they get drawn into playing a mysterious game, they are forced to work together and focus on the bigger picture. It’s a little bit Jumanji mixed with an episode of The Outer Limits.
Hush (2016)
This intense and psychological thriller will have you on the edge of your seat. Watch in horror as a deaf and mute woman is systematically stalked outside and inside her home. You may find yourself yelling at the screen to warn her — “Behind you!”
Clown (2014)
Clowns can be extremely creepy and sometimes deadly, like in this frightening horror movie from Eli Roth, Christopher D. Ford, and Jon Watts (who co-wrote and directed Spider-Man: Homecoming). A well-intended father puts on a clown outfit for his son’s birthday party and then slowly transforms into a demon clown targeting his family and others. Watts and Ford even “tricked” Roth into becoming a producer, by releasing a trailer for Clown and saying it was a film by Roth. However, Roth was so impressed that he actually teamed up with them and signed on as a producer.
