With ‘Game of Thrones’ out of the running for 2017, a crop of new shows shined at the Emmy Awards on Sunday night…
The 2017 Emmy Awards are officially a wrap and it’s safe to say the night largely belonged to the Hulu series ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ with the show picking up numerous awards including best drama and best actress for Elizabeth Moss.
The series based on the 1985 novel of the same name takes place in a dystopian future where fertility is nearly extinct thanks to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and environmental pollution, a new state class has risen to power in what once was the United States. Now women are brutally subjugated and in a place known as Gilead, girls are raised as “handmaids” where they must submit to masters who will attempt to impregnate them as many times as possible to bear children for them.
“The Handmaid’s Tale” was a critical and commercial hit for Hulu and that came through on awards night as well with the series picking up numerous trophies including best drama, best actress, best writing, best supporting actress and best directing.
In the limited series side of the awards, HBO’s “Big Little Lies” also dominated with numerous awards including best series and best actress for Nicole Kidman.
Sadly freshman hits such as “Stranger Things” and “Westworld” were completely shut out during the Emmy Awards with only a few categories going to any series other than “The Handmaid’s Tale” in the drama categories.
