When the Duffer brothers first created ‘Stranger Things’ they already had a very specific story in mind that they wanted to tell and it seems the success of the show won’t change that.
While fans anxiously await the debut of ‘Stranger Things’ season 2 on October 27 on Netflix, the Duffer brothers have already begun answering questions about the end game for the series.
According to the sibling duo, ‘Stranger Things’ was created as one complete story and the first season served as the initial chapter with the second season carrying on as the sequel. While they don’t have any definitive plans yet on how many episodes or seasons it will take to tell the story, the Duffer brothers know ‘Stranger Things’ won’t carry on past four or five seasons at most.
“The truth is we don’t know. The honest truth is we have an end point. We know where we want to end the show and you never know how long it’s going to take to get there. I do not want it going on too long. I don’t think this storyline is built to sustain that many seasons. It’s not like that,” the Duffer brothers told TV Line at the 2017 Emmy Awards.
“That’s why we’re calling it a sequel. We’re not going to get up into six [seasons] or something like that. So we’ll see. Could be four, could be five [seasons]. We’re figuring it out. I’m staying very open to it. The key is we stay excited and the cast stays excited and that we want to be there.”
The Duffer brothers say that Netflix has been very supportive of their vision to tell the story for ‘Stranger Things’ the way they always intended without pushing for more episodes or a continuation past what they envisioned just for the sake of more viewership.
‘Stranger Things’ was definitely a breakout hit for Netflix in 2016 and the second season is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated shows of the fall.
The Duffer brothers also teased a few new items for season 2 including the reverberations of Barb’s death still echoing throughout the town of Hawkins, Indiana although Shannon Purser isn’t returning for the sophomore season.
They also said that season 2 of ‘Stranger Things’ will be a very emotional journey for Eleven when she returns and this time around she has hair and actually speaks in complete sentences!
The final teaser was regarding the end of season 2, which the Duffer brothers say finishes in a very satisfying way for the viewers while still leaving a nice cliffhanger to get ready for season 3.
