The release date for the highly anticipated ‘Wonder Woman’ sequel has been pushed back from 2019 to 2020…

For those waiting to see ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ — the highly anticipated sequel to ‘Wonder Woman’ — will have to wait a little longer.

On Monday, Warner Bros. announced that ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ would be pushed back from a November 2019 release date to a new June 5, 2020 release date.

The reason given by the studio comes down to the belief that the sequel to ‘Wonder Woman’ should be a major summer film versus being released towards the end of next year.

“We had tremendous success releasing the first Wonder Woman film during the summer so when we saw an opportunity to take advantage of the changing competitive landscape, we did. This move lands the film exactly where it belongs,” Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. President of Domestic Distribution, said in a statement.

The first ‘Wonder Woman’ film starring Gal Gadot and directed by Patty Jenkins was a massive success for Warner Bros. and DC with more than $821 million earned at the worldwide box office.

The sequel has been a high priority for the studio ever since with Jenkins returning to direct alongside Gadot in the starring role. Chris Pine is also returning for the ‘Wonder Woman’ sequel as well as new cast members Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig, who will be playing the villainous Cheetah in the film.

The film landing a highly coveted release date in the summer just adds to the faith that Warner Bros. has that ‘Wonder Woman’ might be the biggest superhero franchise on their entire roster right now.

Filming and production on the movie are still ongoing with ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ set for release on June 5, 2020.
