The writer behind ‘IT: Chapter Two’ addresses if there would ever be a potential spinoff movie after the new film opens later this year…
Stephen King has built a vast shared universe where many of his scariest stories take place but he’s never expanded much on his classic book ‘IT’, which remains one of his most popular novels to date.
The newest film adaptation of King’s iconic horror story featuring the terrifying Pennywise the Clown ended up making more than $700 million at the box office with the next installment — ‘IT: Chapter Two’ due out on September 6.
Considering the huge success of the first ‘IT’ movie and the anticipation already surrounding ‘IT: Chapter Two’, it’s understandable that Warner Bros., the studio behind the franchise, might want to dig further and further into that universe for even more films in the future.
Gary Dauberman, who wrote the script for ‘IT: Chapter Two’ as well as the upcoming ‘Annabelle Comes Home’, definitely understands the idea that the ‘IT’ universe could potentially expand, especially given the history surrounding Pennywise and his attachment to the town of Derry, Maine.
Still, Dauberman doesn’t expect Warner Bros. to actually explorer that possibility, although admittedly he has some ideas in mind if a spinoff ever actually happened.
“I’m sure there’s interest but I gotta say we want to be respectful to the material of the book. I don’t think anybody’s over there, in fact I know there’s no one over there going ‘Hey, let’s definitely do this and we could tell this story of what happened at the beaver trapping camp,’ or whatever,” Dauberman told Bloody Disgusting this week.
“While you could [tell that story], and I think it would be cool, I don’t think that’s what people are doing currently if that makes sense. You know what I mean?
“So yes, to answer your question I think there is room to build on the mythology of ‘IT’ because ‘IT’ has been around from the beginning of time, but I don’t know if there are any plans for it. I was just very happy to tackle the book.”
There was some brief exploration into the history of Pennywise during the first ‘IT’ movie and there will likely be even more in ‘IT: Chapter Two’ when the Losers Club reunites to take on the ferocious and fearsome clown for a second time but it remains to be seen if there would ever be a spinoff universe based on King’s original material.
‘IT: Chapter Two’ opens on September 6 with a new trailer expected in July.
