Neil Gaiman’s ‘Sandman’ Officially Ordered to Series at Netflix

Neil Gaiman’s popular comic book series ‘Sandman’ has received a 10 episode order for a new series at Netflix…

The long wait for a ‘Sandman’ adaptation is over.

The popular comic book created by writer Neil Gaiman has received a series  order deal from Warner Bros. and Netflix. ‘Sandman’ has been one of the most talked about comic book properties being adapted into either a film or television series for years but no one has been able to get the project off the ground despite numerous attempts.

Several film versions have been pitched over the years including a recent attempt with Joseph Gordon Levitt that fell apart back in 2016. Now it appears an ongoing TV series will ultimately be the first true adaptation of ‘Sandman’ with a deal nearly struck between the studio and Netflix.

The new series on Netflix has been ordered for 10 episodes for the first season.

‘Sandman’ is a critically acclaimed comic book that ran from 1989 to 1996 that has long been talked about as a potential film or TV series.

The original story in ‘Sandman’ follows the lead character Dream — also known as Morpheus and other names — who is a member of the Endless, a group that also contains his siblings Delirium, Desire, Destruction, Despair, Destiny and Death. At the start of ‘Sandman’, Dream is captured and held prisoner for 70 years before finally breaking free from his captors. Once released, Dream sets out to rebuild his kingdom, which has fallen into disrepair in his absence.

There’s no word yet on how quickly production on a ‘Sandman’ series could begin but this would certainly seem like an important project for Netflix after losing the Marvel TV adaptations after cancelling every series from that partnership. Netflix also has a deal with Mark Millar for his back catalog of characters and books but nothing quite as well known as ‘Sandman’, which is obviously why this series will be a high priority for the streaming giant.

Allan Heinber (Grey’s Anatomy) is expected to serve as showrunner on ‘Sandman’ with Gaiman on board to serve as an executive producer for the series.
