Horror legend Sid Haig — best known for roles in films such as ‘House of 1,000 Corpses’ and ‘The Devil’s Rejects — has died at the age of 80.
His wife revealed the news on the actor’s Instagram page after he passed away this past Saturday night following complications from an ‘accident’ that hospitalized him recently.
“On Saturday, September 21, 2019, my light, my heart, my true love, my King, the other half of my soul, Sidney, passed from this realm on to the next. He has returned to the Universe, a shining star in her heavens. He was my angel, my husband, my best friend and always will be. He adored his family, his friends and his fans. This came as a shock to all of us. We, as a family, are asking that our privacy and time to mourn be respected.”
Haig just recently made a brief appearance in the film ‘3 From Hell’, which was Rob Zombie’s sequel to ‘House of 1,000 Corpses’ and ‘The Devil’s Rejects’ after he was initially expected to have a starring role. Unfortunately, Haig’s health prevented him from a larger role, which was noticeable in his weight loss in the short scene he had in the movie.
“That’s the reason why [his appearance was so brief]. It was his health,” Zombie explained just after ‘3 From Hell’ was released less than two weeks ago. “There was nothing else I could do. It was very unfortunate because a year before that when we all met and were discussing the script, or maybe it wasn’t even a year… eight months, whatever… he seemed like the same old Sid. Whatever he is, six-foot-four, big and burly. I go ‘Yeah! Everybody looks the same!’ and you know, it’s just at that age things can happen quick once you get sick.”
Haig’s acting career stretches back nearly 60 years when he first started landing roles in films and television. He made numerous appearances in series such as ‘Gunsmoke’ and ‘Mission: Impossible’.
In later years, Haig became a fixture in dozens of horror films while often collaborating with Zombie on his various projects including his 2007 remake of ‘Halloween’. Haig also made appearances in a pair of Quentin Tarantino films — ‘Jackie Brown’ and ‘Kill Bill 2’.
Both Zombie and his wife Sheri paid tribute to Haig on Monday following news of his passing.
