“Doctor Strange” will need to conjure up a new director.
On Thursday, Scott Derrickson announced that he was departing the upcoming sequel titled “Docter Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness” over the infamous “creative difference.”
“Marvel and I have mutually agreed to part ways on Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences. I am thankful for our collaboration and will remain on as EP,” Derrickson wrote on Twitter.

No further details were released outside of Derrickson’s statement but the move comes after he already directed the first “Doctor Strange” film, which was a critical and commercial hit for Marvel Studios. Derrickson was returning for the sequel, which was expected to take a slightly darker turn in what was being described as Marvel’s first foray into horror with the next “Doctor Strange” movie.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige downplayed that the upcoming “Doctor Strange” sequel would be categorized as horror, although he has stated that the film would have some scarier elements than many past films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film was also supposed to directly tie to the upcoming Disney+ series “WandaVision,” which will debut later this year.
“Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness” is still scheduled for release on May 7, 2021 with production on the film expected to kick off later this year. As of now, Marvel is expected to stay on schedule for that release date as the search for a new director begins.
Derrickson won’t be sitting on the sidelines for very long because he had already signed onto two different projects in addition to the new “Doctor Strange” movie after he first came to prominence while directing horror films such as “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” and “Sinister.”
Marvel is typically very tight lipped when directors have departed in the past and it’s not likely they’ll change course this time around until a new person has been selected to take over the “Doctor Strange” sequel starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
