Stuart Gordon — the legendary horror director and writer behind “Re-Animator” — has died at age 72.
News of his passing came via his rep Dominic Mancini in a statement sent to the Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday.
“He was a lovely man, a dear friend, a client for nearly a decade, and will be greatly missed,” Mancini said in a statement. “He was an icon in the horror genre, a loved mentor and bright light that inspired and encouraged aspiring genre filmmakers to excel at their craft. He left his fingerprints on the film industry for generations to come to enjoy.”
Gordon was best known for his work on several prominent horror films during the 1980s including “Castle Freak” “From Beyond” and “Dolls.” Unbeknownst to many of his admirers from the horror genre, Gordon also co-created the original feature film “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” for Disney in 1989.
Gordon also took his affinity for horror to the small screen after working on a pair of episodes of the Showtime anthology series “Masters of Horror” as well as an episode of the NBC series “Fear Itself.”
Of course, “Re-Animator” remains Gordon’s most prolific work in the horror genre with that film now regarded as a cult classic after it was first released in 1985.
