‘Hellraiser’ Series in the Works at HBO with ‘Halloween’ Director On Board

A new “Hellraiser” series is currently in the works at HBO with “Halloween” director David Gordon Green on board to direct the first few episodes…

Everybody wants to be in the “Hellraiser” business again.

Following news that a film reboot of the franchise was in the works, HBO is now developing its own series based on the original work from Clive Barker that will see “Halloween” director David Gordon Green step into helm the first few episodes.

Mark Verheiden, who previously worked on series such as “Battlestar Galactica” as well as “Daredevil” and Michael Dougherty, who contributed to films such as “Godzilla: King of Monsters” and “Trick r’ Treat” are on board to write the series.

“Hellraiser” is based on the novel “The Hellbound Heart” from Barker, which was originally adapted into a film back in 1987. That film then spawned a slew of sequels that found varying success in theaters or on the home video market. The best known character from the series is Pinhead — the iconic leader of the Cenobites, who is defined by the nails driven into all parts of his face.

The Cenobites themselves emerge from a mysterious puzzle box known as the Lemarchand Configuration, which when opened unleashes the scarred, demonic like creatures who inflict extreme sadomasochism and torture upon their victims.

The series isn’t expected to be a re-imagining of that original story from “The Hellbound Heart” that was then adapted into the “Hellraiser” movie but rather a new set of tales involving the infamous puzzle box and the emergence of the Cenobites.

Green stepping into the project is a huge boost for a potential “Hellraiser” series as the director has become a highly sought after name in horror after he sequelized the original “Halloween” movie with his film of the same name in 2018. Green is currently working on back-to-back sequels titled “Halloween Kills” and Halloween Ends,” which are expected to be released in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

The upcoming television series will not be related in any way to the film reboot also currently being developed.
