The long running #ReleasetheSnyderCut movement finally paid off because Zack Snyder’s vision for “Justice League” will finally land on HBO Max in 2021…
The long running Twitter hashtag #ReleasetheSnyderCut finally paid off.
On Wednesday, Warner Bros. announced that director Zack Snyder will release his version of “Justice League” on the new HBO Max streaming service sometime in 2021. Snyder was the original director on the superhero film but he was forced to hand over the reins to Joss Whedon after tragedy struck his family when his daughter committed suicide.
The end result was a “Justice League” film that lacked Snyder’s original vision for how the movie should play out and when the film was finally released, the reviews were not kind and the DC team-up movie ultimately only grossed just over $657 million worldwide.
Now he’ll get his chance to cut and edit together a completely new version of the movie.
“I want to thank HBO Max and Warner Brothers for this brave gesture of supporting artists and allowing their true visions to be realized. Also a special thank you to all of those involved in the SnyderCut movement for making this a reality,” Snyder said in a statement.
At this time it’s not been decided exactly what the “Snyder Cut” of “Justice League” will look like. It’s possible that a whopping four-hour director’s cut will end up streaming on HBO Max or the movie may be released in six TV style chapters but Snyder will have the full support of Warner Bros. to put together his true vision for the movie.
In fact, financial estimates range between $20 to $30 million will be invested to allow Snyder to finish his cut of the film.
That includes work towards post production effects, scoring and even bringing back some of the actors to record additional dialogue. In the end, Snyder will finally release his version of the movie on HBO Max in 2021.
“It will be an entirely new thing, and, especially talking to those who have seen the released movie, a new experience apart from that movie,” Snyder told the Hollywood Reporter while adding he never saw the version of the”Justice League” movie that was put into theaters. “You probably saw one-fourth of what I did.”
Snyder’s original plans for “Justice League” involved a nearly four hour film, which he knew Warner Bros. would never allow to see the light of day in the theaters. Now he’ll have the opportunity to put everything he wanted into the new “Snyder Cut” including a lot of elements that were left out of the original — and that includes all-time favorite DC villain Darkseid.
Snyder also plans to dig much deeper into character development that was left on the cutting room floor when “Justice League” was actually released.
“What’s so lovely about this is that we get to explore these characters in ways that you’re not able to in a shorter theatrical version,” Snyder added.
With production across Hollywood still shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, there’s no exact timeline for when Snyder will deliver the final cut of his “Justice League” movie but the film will be released on the streaming service some time in 2021. HBO Max will officially launch on May 27.
