Universal is moving forward with another monster movie, this time with “The Wolfman” starring Ryan Gosling in the lead role…
Ryan Gosling is ready to take his stab at becoming a Universal monster.
The Academy Award nominated actor is expected to star in an updated take on “The Wolfman” with a new movie being developed around him with the search for a director already underway. Universal has been plotting a film series based around their famous monsters but the failure of Tom Cruise’s “The Mummy” nearly sunk the project.
Thankfully, Leigh Wannell’s surprise hit “The Invisible Man” starring Elisabeth Moss was well received with both audiences and critics alike and Universal is now moving forward with new films set in their monster universe.
While details surrounding the new “Wolfman” film remain sketchy, rumors are that the movie will take place in present day with a vibe similar to the film “Nightcrawler” starring Jake Gyllenhaal with a supernatural spin of course.
Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, who both wrote for the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black” penned the script with the original idea coming from Gosling.
It’s unknown when deals will be finalized or a director chosen but with the coronavirus pandemic still keeping productions shut down, Universal probably has plenty of time to make those decisions.
“The Wolfman” has seen numerous incarnations of the years including the original version from 1941 starring Lon Chaney Jr. An updated version was released in 2010 starring Benicio Del Toro but the movie flopped at the box office earning just over $142 million worldwide after spending $150 million budget.
