The film and television industry will soon get back to work in California.
On Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an order to allow production to resume in the state as of June 12 under new guidelines that must be followed as filming will start again for the first time in several months.
Productions shut down at the start of the coronavirus pandemic with numerous movies and television series forced to abandon filming as well as special effects work, post production and just about any other sort of job revolving around the entertainment industry. Now under these new guidelines, the California film and TV industry will begin getting back to work this month.
“Music, TV and film production may resume in California, recommended no sooner than June 12, 2020, and subject to approval by county public health officers within the jurisdictions of operations following their review of local epidemiological data including cases per 100,000 population, rate of test positivity, and local preparedness to support a health care surge, vulnerable populations, contact tracing and testing,” the California Department of Public Health said in a statement via the Governor’s Office on Friday.
“To reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, productions, cast, crew and other industry workers should abide by safety protocols agreed by labor and management, which may be further enhanced by county public health officers. Back office staff and management should adhere to Office Workspace guidelines published by the California Department of Public Health and the California Department of Industrial Relations, to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.”
The film and TV industry has been crippled by the COVID-19 outbreak and even with the restart date, it will probably take some time for productions to get back underway again. Numerous high profile films have already been pushed back or delayed because of the production shutdowns. The same can be said for television series with many shows shutting down before a season could be finished without any expectations about when filming could begin again.
With California set to allow the film and television industry to return to work on June 12, expect the dominoes to begin falling in other states where many productions take place. Georgia has been a major hub for filming over the past few years as well as Vancouver, which is where almost all of the CW series shoot. New York is another prominent filming location and similar guidelines that helped California prepare for productions to restart was also sent to N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
