Jurnee Smollett will reprise her role as “Black Canary” for a new film in the works at HBO Max where she will re-team with “Lovecraft Country” showrunner Misha Green…
“Black Canary” will sing again.
After first appearing as the DC Comics character in the “Birds of Prey” film in 2020, Jurnee Smollett is returning as Black Canary for a new movie being developed at HBO Max.
The film will re-team Smollett with “Lovecraft Country” showrunner Misha Green, who is writing the script after they previously worked together on the critically acclaimed HBO series.
In “Birds of Prey,” Smollett’s character Dinah Lance aka Black Canary was a singer in a nightclub owned by crime boss Roman Sionis, which is where she first befriends Harley Quinn after a drunken night out. Dinah is eventually promoted to become Roman’s driver but she soon learns her boss is a sadistic killer who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. When she turns on him, Dinah becomes public enemy No. 1 alongside her new friends including Harley, Cassandra Cain, The Huntress and Renee Montoya.
Black Canary also possesses a metahuman skill to unleash a deadly hypersonic scream, which allows her to do a lot more than just shatter glass when she lets her voice go.
In many ways, Smollett was the breakout performance from “Birds of Prey” and that led directly into her much beloved role on the HBO series “Lovecraft Country” where she first worked with Green.
Now they’ll team up again for the “Black Canary” movie, which is expected to debut exclusively on HBO Max. The streaming network has started to pick up more and more comic book film projects lately including “Batgirl” and the upcoming “Blue Beetle” movie as well.
