Veteran character actor Paul Herman has died at the age of 76.
Perhaps best known for his recurring role as “Beansie” Gaeta on “The Sopranos,” it was his frequent co-star Michael Imperioli who broke the news about his passing on Wednesday.
“Our friend and colleague PAUL HERMAN has passed away,” Imperioli wrote on Instagram. “Paulie was just a great dude. A first class storyteller and raconteur and one hell of an actor. Goodfellas, Once Upon a Time in America , The Irishman and of course The Sopranos are some highlights.
“Paulie lived around the corner from me the last few years and i am glad we got to spend some time together before he left us. I’ll miss him. Lots of love to his family, friends and our community of actors and filmmakers.”
Born in Brooklyn in 1946, Herman didn’t start his acting career until 1982 when he starred alongside Joe Pesci in the film “Dear Mr. Wonderful.” Herman would appear alongside Pesci in several Martin Scorsese films including cameo spots in “Goodfellas” and “Casino” as well as a starring role in “The Irishman.”
On television, Herman was best known for his role as Peter “Beansie” Gaeta on “The Sopranos” where he was a frequent recurring star following his first appearance back in season 2 when he ran afoul of recently paroled mobster Richie Aprile (played by David Proval). Herman would make his final appearance in the show during the last season during an episode titled “Remember When” where he worked opposite James Gandolfini and Tony Sirico.
Herman was also a recurring character on the HBO series “Entourage” where he played Vincent Chase’s hot-headed accountant Marvin. “Entourage” creator Doug Ellin paid tribute to Herman following his passing.
