“The Crow” will fly again with Bill Skarsgard set to star alongside FKA Twigs in a reboot from director Rupert Sanders…

Following years of attempts to revive “The Crow” for a reboot, it appears a new film based on the comic book by James O’Barr will finally happen.

Bill Skarsgard — best known for his role as Pennywise the Clown in the recent “It” films — has been cast in the lead role as Eric Draven — a musician who is brutally murdered alongside his fiancee by a gang of thugs before being resurrected by a crow that gives him supernatural powers to hunt down and avenge their deaths.

Skarsgard will be joined by singer-turned-actress FKA Twigs in a “modern reimagining” of the story with Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsmen, Ghost in the Shell” serving as the director. The script was written by Zach Baylin, who recently earned an Oscar nomination for his work on the film “King Richard.”

“The Crow is beautiful, dark, poetic, and sometimes disturbing,” Sanders said in a statement. “It is a story of love, loss, grief, and revenge. It is a great honor to revisit James O’Barr’s iconic comic and reimagine The Crow as a foreboding voice of today.”

“The Crow” comic book was originally adapted into a critically acclaimed film back in 1994 starring the late Brandon Lee as Eric Draven in a slightly different version of the story from the original in the comics. In the comics version, Eric and his fiancee Shelly get stuck in a broken down car when they are accosted.

In the film version, Eric and Shelly are tenants in a building with the owner attempting to evict everyone but when they refuse to leave, he sends a group of thugs to send them a message. Eric is beaten and left for dead while he watches as Shelly is brutalized and raped repeatedly before he gets tossed out a window to fall to his death.

Sadly, Lee lost his life during the filming of the movie after a gun discharged that had been improperly loaded fired a round into his abdomen and doctors were unable to save him.

Filming on “The Crow” was completed after Lee’s death with the movie eventually earning $94 million at the box office.

Following that film, several sequels to “The Crow” were released, although none of them found anywhere near the same kind of success much less receiving praise from critics. Attempts to reboot the franchise have been happening for several years including one version that went as far as Jason Momoa being cast in the lead role but that eventually fell apart in development over the budget for the film.

Now all signs are pointing towards production on this version of “The Crow” starting later this year with Skarsgard in the lead role alongside FKA Twigs and Sanders as the director.
