“Star Wars” celebration is currently happening in California, which means a ton of announcements were made on Thursday including some details about the highly anticipated third season of “The Mandalorian.”
With the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” limited series dropping on Friday on Disney+, there was a lot to talk about in the “Star Wars” universe so we’ll break down each piece of news here.
THE MANDALORIAN SEASON 3 SET FOR 2023
The first details for “The Mandalorian” season 3 were revealed on Thursday, although fans might be a little sad to find out that the show won’t return until February 2023.
While that’s obviously disappointing, series creator Jon Favreau did bring along some special guests to help tease what’s coming next including Katee Sackhoff returning in her role as Bo-Katan Kryze.
Of course, Sackhoff famously voiced the iconic character in the “Star Wars” animated series before eventually taking on the live action role in “The Mandalorian” season 2. Now she’s set to return and it appears she might be going home again after a brief clip was played for those in attendance with Din Djarin aka Mando teasing his plans in season 3.
“I’m going to Mandalore so that I may be forgiven for my transgressions.”
When we last saw Mando, he was teaming up with Grogu yet again after returning to Tatooine to help his old friend Boba Fett fend off an attack from the Pyke Syndicate. When “The Book of Boba Fett” ended, Mando and Grogu had just boarded a new ship — a refurbished relic from Naboo — as they set out on new adventures together.
Obviously, Sackhoff returning can only mean she’ll be interacting with Mando once again as she seeks to return Mandalore to its previous glory except for one problem — he’s the rightful owner to the Darksaber, which is an object that serves as a symbol for the one true leader on the planet.
“I may have some unfinished business,” Sackhoff said about her return.
STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW
A new “Star Wars’ series called “Skeleton Crew” was also announced on Thursday with Jude Law set to star in the show that’s being developed by “Spider-Man: No Way Home” director Jon Watts.
The series will center around a group of children lost in space, and it will be set in the Ahsoka/The Mandalorian time frame following the fall of the Galactic Empire but years before the events in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
“It’s the story of their journey trying to find their way home,” Watts said. “It stars four kids, but it is not a kids show.”
“Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” is set to debut in 2023.
ANDOR TRAILER AND DEBUT DATE REVEALED
The next major “Star Wars” series will arrive on August 31 with “Andor,” which features Diego Luna reprising his role as Cassian Andor from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
Of course in that film, Andor was part of the team responsible for stealing the secret plans for The Death Star that eventually landed in the hands of Princess Leia and the Rebellion as they fought back against the evil Galactic Empire. Andor ultimately perished alongside the rest of his crew while handing off those blueprints, which eventually helped Leia, Luke Skywalker and Han Solo lead the charge to destroy The Death Star in “Star Wars: A New Hope.”
This series will serve as a prequel to “Rogue One” with a much different Andor being introduced in the series with the Rebellion just starting to rise up against the evil Emperor. “Andor” takes place five years prior to “Rogue One” with the 12 episode first season stretching over a year in time.
A second season has already been ordered with production set to begin in November with an additional 12 episodes that will span four years in time with the finale leading directly into the events that happened in “Rogue One.”
Here’s the plot synopsis for “Andor.”
“The “Andor” series will explore a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make. The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. It’s an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero.”
The series will also see Genevieve O’Reilly return as Mon Mothma, who was a Senator turned Rebel leader, after she first appeared in the role in “Revenge of the Sith” before also appearing in ‘Rogue One.”
