“Game of Thrones” creator George R.R. Martin reveals a few new details about the Jon Snow series in development at HBO with Kit Harington returning to the role…
There are several “Game of Thrones” spinoff series in development but none received quite the amount of buzz as the recently reveled show centered around Jon Snow with Kit Harington serving as the driving force behind the idea.
The series would follow Jon Snow after the events of “Game of Thrones,” which means it would be the first story told after the eight season run of the original show that ended in 2019.
Now according to “Game of Thrones” creator George R.R. Martin, it was actually Harington who came up with the idea behind the series that is currently being called “Snow” and he’s been working tirelessly on developing the show at HBO for some time now.
“Yes, it was Kit Harrington who brought the idea to us,” Martin wrote on his blog. “I cannot tell you the names of the writers/ showrunners, since that has not been cleared for release yet… but Kit brought them in too, his own team, and they are terrific.
“Various rumors are floating around about my involvement, or lack of same. I am involved, just as I am with THE HEDGE KNIGHT and THE SEA SNAKE and TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, and all the animated shows. Kit’s team have visited me here in Santa Fe and worked with me and my own team of brilliant, talented writer/ consultants to hammer out the show.”
Martin added that “Snow” has been in development just as long as the other “Game of Thrones” spinoffs currently in the works but for whatever reason news about the potential show hadn’t leaked out until just recently.
While Martin had been adamant in the past that his plans for the “Song of Ice and Fire” book series would end with a planned seventh novel titled “A Dream of Spring,” this would presumably be the first time he would help continue the story for at least one of the characters from his books.
Now just because a show is in development doesn’t mean HBO will order it to series but it seems like “Snow” will be working with a head start against every other spinoff with Harington so deeply committed to the project that would also see him return to reprise the role he played on “Game of Thrones.”
When “Game of Thrones” ended, Jon Snow surrendered his rights to the Iron Throne after it was revealed that he was actually Aegon Targaryen — the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark — and he was released to return north of The Wall where he would live out his days among the wildings.
The new show would presumably follow Jon on his adventures after “Game of Thrones” ended, which means there’s all sorts of possible cameos that could be included including the possible return of both of his surviving sisters — Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), who is now ruling as the Queen in the North, and Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), who set sail on a ship of her own for adventures beyond Westeros.
As Martin mentioned, there are several more shows in development based on “Game of Thrones” but the only one to get the green light for a full series order is “House of the Dragon,” which is set to debut on HBO on August 21.
With San Diego Comic Con happening in July, it’s entirely possibly that HBO will reveal more about any further “Game of Thrones” spinoffs during a panel presentation that will likely happen during the massive convention as it returns for the first time in three years due to the global pandemic.
