The upcoming “Better Call Saul” finale will also serve as the last story set in the “Breaking Bad” universe…
The “Breaking Bad” universe has now spanned two different shows and a spinoff film but the upcoming “Better Call Saul” finale will be the last time those characters appear on screen together.
That’s according to series creator Vince Gilligan, who addressed any potential stories that could still be lingering from the “Breaking Bad” universe as the “Better Call Saul” finale is set to debut on Monday night, August 15.
“You’ve got to know when to leave the party,” Gilligan told reporters on Wednesday. “You don’t want to be the guy with the lampshade on his head. … I know I was asked the same thing at the end of Breaking Bad and I gave the same answer, but I need to prove to myself that I’m not a one-trick pony.”
The same could be said for “Better Call Saul” co-creator Peter Gould, who has also deeply involved with “Breaking Bad” during its five season run that lasted 62 episodes.
As much as Gould has loved working on both series, he admits that it’s time to move on and try his hand at some different projects now that “Better Call Saul” is coming to an end.
“It’s a lot to ask of an audience,” Gould said. “I couldn’t be happier and more proud of the work, but I have some other things I want to try. I love the cast, I love Albuquerque, I love whole group, so it would be great to keep the band together as much as possible.”
When “Breaking Bad” ended in 2013, the creators behind the series didn’t feel done with some of the characters — particularly Saul Goodman as portrayed by Bob Odenkirk — and that led to “Better Call Saul” being set up as a prequel series. Gilligan then decided to do a spinoff film called “El Camino” that tracked Jesse Pinkman after the closing moments of “Breaking Bad” to give that particular story closure as well.
Now with only one episode remaining of “Better Call Saul,” the team behind the award winning series is ready to move on even as they all still hold so much admiration for the show as well as the actors that brought the prequel to life in the aftermath of “Breaking Bad.”
“It’s a delight,” Gilligan said when addressing the ‘Better Call Saul’ finale. “How anxious are we? I’m not nearly as much as I was with Breaking Bad. Maybe I’m getting older, but I have other things to worry about. But I can’t wait to see how people react.”
