“House of the Dragon” will roar again.
The “Game of Thrones” prequel has officially been renewed for season 2 on HBO after the debut episode earned the highest ratings ever for a series premiere with nearly 10 million viewers. In the days since the episode was released, the first installment of “House of the Dragon” has now been seen by more than 20 million households across various platforms including HBO Max.
“We are beyond proud of what the entire ‘House of the Dragon’ team has accomplished with season one,” Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming said in a statement. “Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV. A huge thank you to George, Ryan, and Miguel for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two.”
“House of the Dragon” takes place nearly 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” when the Targaryen family was still ruling Westeros. The series centers around the conflict about the line of succession after King Viserys I Targaryen names his eldest daughter Rhaenyra as the next person to sit on the Iron Throne, which puts him at odds with just about every lord in the Seven Kingdoms as no woman has ever ruled Westeros before.
The debut episode not only received massive ratings but the show also enjoyed praise from critics as the first “Game of Thrones” spinoff took flight.
HBO has several more “Game of Thrones” spinoffs in development including animated series, although there’s no word when or if any of those will get put into production. Considering the reception for “House of the Dragon,” It’s hard to imagine HBO won’t make that push in the near future.
