The first look at The Watcher has arrived, which is based on a terrifying true story about a family that moved into a mysterious house in New Jersey…
Imagine finding your dream home in a posh neighborhood only to receive a creepy letter from a stalker who promises they’re watching you and your entire family thanks to an obsession with your house.
That’s exactly what happened to a real family in New Jersey — as documented in an article that first appeared in New York Magazine back in 2018 — after they purchased a home but then started receiving mysterious letters from somebody calling themselves The Watcher.
Now that story is being transformed into a limited series at Netflix from Ryan Murphy — the creator behind American Horror Story — with Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale leading the dramatized version of this terrifying tale.
Here’s the official premise from Netflix:
“After the Brannock family moves into what was supposed to be their suburban dream home, it quickly becomes a living hell. Ominous letters from someone calling themself “The Watcher” are just the beginning as the neighborhood’s sinister secrets come spilling out. Inspired by the true story of the infamous “Watcher” house in New Jersey.”
The as-of-yet unsolved crime turned neighbor against neighbor with police investigating the threatening letters that went as far as naming the family’s children and revealing details that could only have come from standing nearby enough to hear conversations happening around the house. The real life family eventually abandoned the home out of fear of what might actually happen if The Watcher ever decided to do more than just watch them from afar.
The new series will take things one step further as the Brannock family faces real terror from this foreboding menace keeping a close eye on them after moving into their new home.
