Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine for one last run in Deadpool 3 alongside Ryan Reynolds with the film set for release in 2024…
What better way to welcome Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe than with an old friend by his side.
On Tuesday, Ryan Reynolds officially announced that Deadpool 3 will be released on September 6, 2024 and Hugh Jackman will return to play Wolverine one last time for the upcoming sequel.
“I’ve had to really search my soul on this one,” Reynolds said when announcing the news on social media. “His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character, find new depth, new motivation, new meaning. Every Deadpool needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside and I… have nothing. Yeah… Just completely empty up here and terrifying. But we did have one idea.”
With that, Jackman entered the video walking behind Reynolds, who asked “Hey Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?”
Jackman casually answered back “Yeah, sure, Ryan.”

With that, Jackman will join the MCU to play the popular X-Men character for at least one more film after previously stating that he was retiring from his role as Wolverine following the critically acclaimed Logan came out in 2017.
Rumors have been swirling for months about Deadpool 3, which was already in development at Marvel Studios after Disney completed its purchase of FOX along with all of the X-Men characters. The third film in the franchise will still be ‘R’ rated — a first for Marvel Studios — with Stranger Things executive producer Shawn Levy on board to direct.
With the current phase of the MCU called The Multiverse Saga, it’s impossible to tell exactly how Deadpool and Wolverine will end up sharing space with other characters already established by Marvel Studios but this is the first confirmed film with the X-Men scheduled to appear.
Of course, Reynolds and Jackman first shared screen time together in the much maligned X-Men Origins: Wolverine film in 2009 where Deadpool also made his first appearance (with his mouth sewn shut, thus the meaning behind Reynolds’ message on Twitter).
Over the years, Reynolds and Jackman have maintained a hilarious friendship poking fun at each other through interviews and social media but now they’ll team together for what will undoubtedly become one of the most anticipated releases on the Marvel schedule over the next few years.
