The last chapter in the Roy family saga known as “Succession” will get a full length feature sized episode in the series finale…
Buckle up, fuckleheads because “Succession” is getting a super-sized series finale.
The Emmy award winning series, which just passed the midway point in the fourth and final season, will go out with a feature length last episode on HBO. The series finale will clock in at around 90 minutes — the longest episode of the entire series — when “Succession” comes to a close on May 28 on HBO.
“Succession” has been one of HBO’s most critically acclaimed dramas with the show already winning a pair of Emmy Awards for Best Drama Series. There’s little doubt the show will be leading the pack for a third such award after the final season comes to a close.
Creator Jesse Armstrong made the surprise announcement just weeks before “Succession” season 4 started that the show would be ending sooner than many expected. According to Armstrong, the decision to end “Succession” now really came down to the storytelling after the writers all got together to begin breaking ground on the fourth season.
“I got together with a few of my fellow writers before we started the writing of Season 4, in about November, December, 2021, and I sort of said, ‘Look, I think this maybe should be it,” Armstrong said. “But what do you think?’
“And we played out various scenarios: We could do a couple of short seasons, or two more seasons. Or we could go on for ages and turn the show into something rather different, and be a more rangy, freewheeling kind of fun show, where there would be good weeks and bad weeks. Or we could do something a bit more muscular and complete, and go out sort of strong. And that was definitely always my preference.”
The fourth season of “Succession” has already been a rollercoaster after family patriarch Logan Roy — played by Brian Cox — suddenly died in the third episode. Since that time, Logan’s children — Kendall, Roman and Shiv — have been grieving while also finally taking over control of the company that their father ran for decades.
It remains to be seen who will end up on top when “Succession” finally comes to an end but the 90 minute finale should give plenty of time to wrap up those stories, especially knowing that Armstrong has already shut down any chance that there will be a spinoff series in the future.
