Almost exactly 10 years after “It Follows” was released in theaters, a sequel reuniting star Maika Monroe with director David Robert Mitchell is in the works…
“It Follows” — a breakout horror hit from 2014 — will finally get a sequel with star Maika Monroe reuniting with director David Robert Mitchell both returning for the new film titled “They Follow.”
The original film earned over $23 million at the box office on just a $1.3 million budget and became a cult classic among horror fans.
The premise for the original film followed Jay (Monroe) after sleeps with her new boyfriend, Hugh (Jake Weary), for the first time, and she learns that she is the latest recipient of a fatal curse that is passed from victim to victim through sexual intercourse. Death, Jay learns, will creep inexorably toward her as either a friend or a stranger. Jay’s friends don’t believe her seemingly paranoid ravings, until they too begin to see the phantom assassins and band together to help her flee or defend herself.
Mitchell wrote and directed the original film and he’ll once again handle both duties on the sequel.
“It Follows” was one of Monroe’s breakout roles while Mitchell remained an indie darling after he made his 2018 film “Under the Silver Lake” with Andrew Garfield and Riley Keough.
Now the star and director will return for “They Follow” with plot details for the horror sequel still to be revealed.
Neon — the same studio responsible for the Oscar winning film “Parasite” — will serve as producer and distributor in the United States.
Production on “They Follow” is expected to start in 2024 with a release date for the film still to be determined.
