“House of the Dragon” season 2 will debut on Sunday, June 16 but ahead of the premiere two new trailers dropped on Thursday featuring both sides in the Targaryen civil war…
Instead of one super-sized trailer, “House of the Dragon” season 2 decided to drop a pair of trailers — one themed for the Greens led by Aegon II Targaryen and his family led by House Hightower and then the Blacks showing allegiance for their queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and her husband/uncle, Daemon Targaryen.
The two sides are preparing to square off in one of the bloodiest wars in the history of Westeros as the Targaryen clans battle for control of the Seven Kingdoms and who will sit on the Iron Throne.
When “House of the Dragon” season 1 ended, Aegon had been crowned king after his mother, Alicent Hightower believed her dying husband Viserys I Targaryen — drugged up and muttering his last breath — spoke about the prophecy regarding the song of ice and fire but when he mentioned the name Aegon, she took it to mean their son should be king. A coronation followed and Aegon was crowned the new King of the Seven Kingdoms.
Back on Dragonstone, Rhaenyra got word about her usurper half-brother taking the throne that was promised to her as her father’s eldest child so she began gathering her forces and seeing which of the Lords who had pledged their allegiance to her would remain loyal. She sent regents to several different kingdoms including her sons being dispatched to various parts of the Seven Kingdoms.
Sadly, Lucerys took a short flight to Storm’s End to parlay with House Baratheon but when he arrived, he discovered that his cousin Aemond Targaryen had already arrived. Aemond pledged to marry one of of Lord Borros Baratheon’s daughters, which meant Storm’s End now belonged to Aegon. Borrow forbade any harm coming to Lucerys under his roof and he allowed the boy to leave but Aemond — after being taunted by his new bride — went after his cousin on the back of his massive dragon Vhagar.
What started as bullying to intimidate his cousin soon turned deadly when Lucerys’ dragon struck out at Vhagar and the much larger and older dragon wiped them both out in a single bite. Lucerys fell to his death much to Aemond’s horror and word got back to Rhaenyra just as the first season ended.
That’s where we pick up with “House of the Dragon” season 2 with the two sides of the Targaryen family ready for war and it’s safe to say nobody walks away from this battle unscathed. Here’s the official synopsis for the eight episode second season from HBO:
“Westeros is on the brink of a bloody civil war with the Green and Black Councils fighting for King Aegon and Queen Rhaenyra, respectively. As each side believes theirs to be the rightful seat on the Iron Throne, the Green and Black trailers reflect those two perspectives in separate yet complementary halves of the same story.”
Check out the two new trailers for “House of the Dragon” season 2 and get ready for the show to return on Sunday night, June 16 on HBO.
