If ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ doesn’t get renewed for another season, the show runners promise they are ready for a series finale this year…
Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ remains a series on the bubble in the game of will they get renewed or not for another season.
The show co-created by Joss Whedon has lived through plenty of ups and downs in terms of ratings success and many wondered if the series was on its last legs after ABC moved it to Friday nights, which is typically where many TV shows go to die. Ratings for ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ haven’t been stellar for season 5, but then again the show sees a massive increase when the numbers are tallied for the live viewing plus seven days for any DVR recordings.
Still there’s a chance ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ won’t get renewed so the show runners are preparing for a season finale that will be satisfying if they get to return for another year or if this marks the end of the series.
“We are in process [of writing the finale],” Jed Whedon told TVLine. “Yeah, we’re ready for if this is the end. We’re definitely going to make it rewarding either way.”
“We know what it is” co-show runner Maurisa Tancharoen added when talking about the end of season 5.
According to Whedon, there are a few things that could be changed about the season finale should the show get renewed but the ultimate story will still play out whether the show is coming back or not.
“We can certainly pivot and there are certain things that we’re putting in that at the last minute could be adjusted,” Whedon said. “But we know at the end we’re not moving off that mark. We’re going to do what we were planning to do, and I think that it’ll be thrilling either way.”
If ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ is cancelled, it would be the third Marvel series on ABC that has come to an end. Previously, ‘Agent Carter’ lasted for two seasons with no plans in place for a third while ‘Inhumans’ was launched as a limited series but the show bombed both critically and commercially, which all but eliminated any chance the show would return for another run.
There was another ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ off shoot show titled ‘Marvel’s Most Wanted’ that was being developed but that eventually got canned as well.
Meanwhile, ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ is gearing up for episode No. 100, which airs on Friday night, March 9 and is also described as a game changer for the series.
