The cult classic sci-fi horror film “Attack the Block” will finally receive a long awaited sequel with John Boyega and Joe Cornish both set to return…
“Attack the Block 2” is finally happening.
A decade after the original cult classic sci-fi film was released, director Joe Cornish and star John Boyega are set to return to deliver the highly anticipated sequel.
The first film released in 2011 served as Boyega’s breakout role as he played Moses — the leader of a youth street gang in South London, who ends up leading a battle against an invading horde of aliens.
Of course, Boyega has since become a massive star including his role in three “Star Wars” films as well as an acclaimed role in the Steve McQueen series “Small Axe.”
Cornish wrote and directed the original movie and there’s been talk for years about returning for a sequel but now the long awaited film is finally happening. Boyega will return in the starring role while also producing the film through his own company.
“It’s been a decade since ‘Attack the Block’ was released and so much has changed since then,” Boyega said. “I’m excited to see this heightened story return to the streets of London. Moses has remained one of my favorite characters to play and bringing him back is a huge honor.”
While “Attack the Block” was never a huge hit at the box office, the film gained cult favorite status over the years while building a loyal audience of fans. The film also starred Jodie Whittaker, who went onto fame in several high profile roles including “Doctor Who” and “Broadchurch.”
As of now, Boyega is set to return as a producer and star with Cornish writing the script and directing the sequel but there’s no word if any of the other cast members might return. Nick Frost — best known for his starring roles in several Edgar Wright films including “Shaun of the Dead” — also appeared in the original film.
