Disney announced a number of films getting pushed back including both “Avengers” sequels as well as two new “Star Wars” films receiving release dates…
Disney has updated the release calendar for numerous major films with several Marvel projects being pushed back along with the surprising announcement of two “Star Wars” movies with official premiere dates.
Changes in the release calendar are common, although it’s likely that at least some of these moves are happening due to the ongoing writer’s strike in Hollywood with several productions shut down as the Writers Guild of America continues to battle for a fair contract with the studios.
Marvel Studios in particular had a massive shift for several films including both of the upcoming “Avengers” movies, which are also dealing with another potentially explosive issue as Jonathan Majors is expected to serve as a lead role in those films. Majors is currently facing assault charges in New York but it’s unknown if that could potentially affect his relationship with Marvel moving forward.
“Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” is being bumped back an entire year from May 2, 2025 to May 1, 2026 while “Avengers: Secret Wars” will move from May 1, 2026 to May 7, 2027.
While most films are being pushed back, the highly anticipated sequel “Deadpool 3,” which will serve as the character’s introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is being bumped up with a new release date on May 3, 2024 after originally being slated to drop on November 8, 2024.
Here’s the full list of changes at Marvel Studios for upcoming releases:
“Deadpool 3” moving to May 3, 2024
“Captain America: Brave New World” moving to July 26, 2024
“Thunderbolts” moving to December 20, 2024
“Blade” moving to February 14, 2025
“Fantastic Four” moving to May 2, 2025
“Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” moving to May 1, 2026
“Avengers: Secret Wars” moving to May 7, 2027
Elsewhere, Disney also announced two new release dates for a pair of “Star Wars” films, although no details were released about the actual movies. Several “Star Wars” films are in development including a continuation of the story surrounding Rey Skywalker (played by Daisy Ridley) that is expected to take place 15 years after the events in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” which was the last theatrical release for the franchise back in 2019.
The first “Star Wars” film is slated for release May 22, 2026 with another film set for release on December 18, 2026.
There’s also a new “Alien” movie coming from “Evil Dead” director Fede Alvarez that is now slated to hit theaters on August 16, 2024.
