“Beetlejuice 2” is officially on the way in 2024 with original stars Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder returning alongside Jenna Ortega…
The ghost with the most is back.
“Beetlejuice 2” has officially been announced by Warner Bros. with a release date set on September 6, 2024 — more than 25 years after the original film dropped back in 1988. As it stands, the sequel will go head-to-head with Marvel’s “Blade” reboot, which is also scheduled to release on the same day, although there’s a good chance that date will change due to production on that film shutting down over the ongoing writer’s strike.
As for “Beetlejuice 2” — Tim Burton is set to return to the director’s chair for the upcoming sequel with original stars Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder also reprising their roles from the original film. Keaton received rave reviews for his portrayal as a poltergeist conjured by a recently deceased couple seeking to exorcize their house from the new tenants living there. Ryder portrayed Lydia Deetz — a gothic icon and the daughter of the family that moves into the house, who can actually see the ghosts of the previous occupants.
“Scream VI” and “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega is also set to join the cast and she’s expected to play Lydia’s daughter in the film. “The Leftovers” star Justin Theroux has also been added to the cast in an unnamed role.
The original “Beetlejuice” also starred Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as the couple who meet an untimely demise that turn to Beetlejuice to get rid of the new family inhabiting their home. Ryder’s parents in the first film were portrayed by Jeffrey Jones and Catherine O’Hara but it’s unknown if anyone else from the original cast — besides Keaton and Ryder — will return for the sequel.
Production on “Beetlejuice 2” is expected to start in London on June 10.
Alfred Gough and Miles Millar penned the script for the film alongside Burton after they worked together on “Wednesday,” the hit “Addams Family” adaptation on Netflix that also stars Ortega.
The original “Beetlejuice” was a smash hit at the box office while earning over $74 million and has remained a cult classic in the decades since its initial release.
