“Billions” will come to a close with the upcoming seventh and final season on Showtime, which also landed a debut date in August…
“Billions” will buy and sell for a final time with the upcoming seventh season on Showtime.
The final season of the series with 12 total episodes is set to debut on Paramount+ with Showtime on August 11 before then premiering on the linear Showtime network on August 13 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
“‘Billions’ has deftly explored power, money and greed in a way that not only made it a massive hit, but also defined its own genre thanks to the creative brain trust of Brian and David,” Chris McCarthy, President & CEO of Showtime, MTV Entertainment Studios, and Paramount Media Networks said in a statement.
“This final season is packed full of the incredible, complex dialogue and character dynamics fans have come to love, and we are thrilled to partner with them on turning this hit series into a global franchise.”
The series created by Brian Koppelman, David Levian and Andrew Ross Sorkin has remained a stalwart on “Showtime” since first debuting back in 2016. The show originally pit hedge fund billionaire Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (Damian Lewis) against U.S. district attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) in a cat-and-mouse game where each gained the upper hand the other throughout several seasons.
Lewis eventually left “Billions” ahead of season 6 following the tragic death of his wife Helen McCrory, which necessitated him spending more time at home in his native England.
In his place stepped Corey Stoll, who portrayed Axe’s longtime rival Michael Prince, and he’s remained the primary antagonist for the past two seasons including season 6 where he took over a lead role opposite Giamatti.
Ahead of season 7 production, Lewis made the surprise announcement that he was returning for “Billions” where he is set to appear in half of the 12 episodes of the season, which will allow him to bring closure to the series he helped launch.
“Billions” had been filming in New York, although production had been shut down at various times due to the ongoing writer’s strike. It appears enough was done already to allow “Billions” to start airing in August for the seventh and final season.
While “Billions” is coming to an end, Showtime has already announced plans to develop several spinoffs of the series with Koppelman and Levian on board as well for the new shows. There’s no word yet when the “Billions” spinoffs could happen but for now get ready for the primary series to come to an end with the last episodes debuting in August.
