‘Birds of Prey’ has added another member to the cast as Chris Messina will play famed Batman villain and serial killer Victor Zsasz…
Chris Messina — best known for his roles on ‘The Mindy Project’ and ‘The Newsroom’ — is the latest addition to the upcoming ‘Birds of Prey’ film that will star Margot Robbie, as she returns to play Harley Quinn after originating the role in ‘Suicide Squad’.
Messina will be playing famed Batman villain and serial killer Victor Zsasz, who is also a major part of the ‘Gotham’ TV series as played by Anthony Carrigan.
In the comics, Victor Zsasz was almost a reverse Bruce Wayne after building an international business alongside his family fortune only to have his parents murdered, which sent him on a downward spiral as he ended up gambling away all of his money before being left destitute on the streets of Gotham. That’s when Zsasz decided to end it all by taking his own life but a homeless person attempted to mug him before he could leap off a bridge and that chance encounter let him know just how meaningless all life could be. Zsasz ended up stabbing the homeless person to death before going on a murderous rampage, marking a spot on his body for every person he kills. Zsasz typically targets young women in the comics, which could explain his connection to the ‘Birds of Prey’ as an all female led superhero faction.
Messina takes over the role after John Leguizamo was reportedly in talks for the role before later dropping out.
Messina will join Ewan McGregor in the villain side of things for ‘Birds of Prey’ after he signed on to play The Black Mask, who will be the main antagonist in the film.
‘Birds of Prey’ also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rosie Perez, Jurnee Smollett-Bell and will be directed by Cathy Yan. The film comes out on February 7, 2020.
