For the first time in history a superhero movie has been nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards as ‘Black Panther’ racked up seven nominations on Tuesday…
‘Black Panther’ was a massive hit at the box office and with critics around the world and now the Ryan Coogler directed film is the first superhero movie in history to snag a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards.
The nominations for the 91st annual Oscars were announced on Tuesday with ‘Black Panther’ scoring seven nominations overall including the Best Picture nod as well as an additional nomination for Best Original Song.
‘Black Panther’ will obviously have some stiff competition in the Best Picture category going up against the seven other nominees — ‘BlacKkKlansman’, ‘A Star Is Born’, ‘Roma’, ‘The Favourite’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Green Book’ and ‘Vice’.
In addition to the nomination for Best Picture, ‘Black Panther’ was also nominated for Best Costume Design, Best Original Song, Best Original Score, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Production Design.
There were several other categories where ‘Black Panther’ could have been nominated including one surprising snub in the Best Adapted Screenplay category after ‘Logan’ earned a nomination there in last year’s Oscar awards.
In addition to ‘Black Panther’ scoring seven Oscar nominations, Sony’s ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ also scored a nomination for Best Animated Feature — a category where that film may be the favorite to win. ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ already took home a similar award for Best Animated Film at the 2019 Golden Globe Awards.
‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ also scored nominations for Best Visual Effects at the upcoming Oscar awards.
The ceremony for the 91st annual Academy Awards will take place on Sunday night, February 24 and airs live on ABC.
