It was a good night for comic book movies at the 2018 Academy Awards with big wins for ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’…

By Damon Martin — Editor/Lead Writer.

It could be said that 2018 was the best year yet for comic book movies in Hollywood and the 91st annual Academy Awards may have just backed that up.

On Sunday night, ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ both walked out with huge wins during the biggest awards show of the year.

‘Black Panther’ was nominated for Best Picture, which many believed was the highest honor the film would receive ahead of the awards. Ultimately, ‘Green Book’ ended up winning Best Picture but it was still a big night for Ryan Coogler’s epic film about an African king from the nation of Wakanda.

‘Black Panther’ ended up with a trio of awards at the 2018 Oscars including Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Original Score. The film was ultimately nominated for several different awards on Sunday night and walked away with three when the show was over.

Despite not winning Best Picture, ‘Black Panther’ was definitely celebrated at the awards with the film getting huge applause every time the movie was mentioned throughout the three-hour plus broadcast.

Meanwhile, ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ ended up winning Best Animated Feature, which wasn’t exactly a surprise but still a huge moment for the comic book industry as a whole.

After winning the Golden Globe, most believed ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ was a lock to win at the Academy Awards but that doesn’t always play out that way — just ask Glenn Close about that one!

‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ was a critical and commercial hit for Sony and now the movie can add Oscar winner to its growing list of accolades.

While ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ had a lot to celebrate on Sunday night, one other comic book movie didn’t end up faring as well in the one category it was nominated in.

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ was nominated for Best Visual Effects but fell to ‘First Man’, which won the award on Sunday night in Hollywood.
