‘Conan the Barbarian’ will look to crush his enemies and see them driven before him in a new ongoing series at Netflix…
A new “Conan the Barbarian” live action series is currently in the works at Netflix.
Originally created by Robert E. Howard, Conan was featured in a series of sword-and-sorcery stories for “Weird Tales” back in 1932. Following that initial introduction, Conan — also known as Conan the Cimmerian — appeared in numerous stories penned by Howard.
Of course the most famous version of “Conan the Barbarian” came in the 1982 film adaptation starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role as the muscle-bound brute from director John Milius. The film produced an eventual sequel in “Conan the Destroyer.”
While the comic book version of Conan continued to appear over the years, the next film adaptation came in 2011 with “Game of Thrones” star Jason Momoa taking over the lead role but that version was ultimately a critical and commercial disappointment.
There have been past attempts to adapt Conan into a television series, including as recently as 2018 when Ryan Condal — the showrunner for the upcoming “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” — was attached to the project at Amazon. Obviously the show never came to fruition and the rights were eventually obtained by Netflix.
As of now, Netflix is just beginning development on the new “Conan the Barbarian” series with a search underway for a showrunner and lead writer. Once that’s secured, then the search will begin for a new lead actor to portray Conan in the series.
