Henry Golding — the breakout star of 2018’s ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ — is in talks to portray silent ninja Snake Eyes in the upcoming ‘G.I. Joe’ spinoff movie from Paramount.
Robert Schwentke, who directed two of the ‘Divergent’ movies, is on board to direct the film with a script from Evan Spiliotopoulos.
Snake Eyes was one of the most popular characters from the ‘G.I. Joe’ cartoons in the 1980’s with the character making appearances in both of the films — ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra’ and ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’. Ray Park, who also portrayed Darth Maul in the ‘Star Wars’ prequels’, played Snake Eyes in those movies.
In the cartoons, Snake Eyes was a silent ninja who worked with G.I. Joe while constantly opposed by another ninja named Storm Shadow, who worked with Cobra. As the story goes, Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow were blood brothers, which only further fueled their animosity towards each other.
The upcoming Snake Eyes spinoff is an origin story for the character as it reportedly centers around seeking revenge for his father’s death, which leads him to join a secretive ninja clan where he also gains acceptance.
As for Golding, he’s become one of the most talked about names in Hollywood since starring in ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ with an upcoming role in the film ‘Last Christmas’ opposite ‘Game of Thrones’ star Emilia Clarke as well as Guy Ritchie’s new movie ‘The Gentlemen’.
