Disney and Lucasfilm will be developing a few ‘Star Wars’ television series with plans to launch at least some of them on their new streaming service…
Get ready for a lot more ‘Star Wars’ on television.
With plans in place to launch a massive streaming service that is expected to rival Netflix, Disney has plans in place to produce several ‘Star Wars’ series that are being specifically developed for that platform.
While there has been work on a ‘Star Wars’ television series for some time, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed just recently that Disney isn’t just developing one show but numerous shows.
“We are developing not just one, but a few Star Wars series specifically for the Disney direct-to-consumer app,” Iger revealed recently. We’ve mentioned that and we are close to being able to reveal at least one of the entities that is developing that for us. Because the deal isn’t completely closed, we can’t be specific about that. I think you’ll find the level of talent, on the television front will be rather significant as well.”
Iger did shut down any possibility that the new deal Disney just recently struck with ‘Game of Thrones’ show runners David Benioff and Dan Weiss had anything to do with the television series. Instead, the in demand duo currently working on the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ for HBO is working specifically on a new series of ‘Star Wars’ films for Lucasfilm and Disney.
“Their interest was in creating a series of films that are Star Wars-based and we’ve actually been talking to them for a long time,” Iger said. “To my knowledge they didn’t express interest in creating a series. They have an idea for a number of films and at some later date I’m sure we’ll disclose to all of you just what those are. They are focused on a point in time in the Star Wars mythology and taking it from there.”
The Disney streaming service is expected to launch in late 2019 with the company already putting plans in motion to pull all of their existing films from Netflix by that time to air exclusive on their own network.
It’s expected that at least one or more of these ‘Star Wars’ series will probably be available at launch to help lure customers into purchase the new streaming service from Disney.
