In a stunning move on Friday, Disney and Marvel Studios reversed course and re-hired James Gunn to write and direct ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’…
James Gunn is back in Marvel’s good graces.
The writer and director has been rehired to lead ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ after he was fired from that same job last year after some controversial tweets from his past surfaced in 2018.
The tweets were made long before Gunn ever worked for Marvel and he apologized for the offensive messages that he meant as jokes but Disney found it as no laughing matter and ultimately removed him from the project. Afterwards, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and the majority of the cast from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ penned a passionate letter to Disney asking for Gunn to remain as the director for the third installment of the series.
Unfortunately, Disney opted to cut ties with Gunn last July and he was then hired by DC and Warner Bros. to write and direct the upcoming ‘Suicide Squad’ sequel.
Now Disney and Marvel have decided to bring Gunn back into the family by once again hiring him to write and direct ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’.
Following his initial exit, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige admitted that plans for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ has all but been shelved as they scrambled to find a replacement for Gunn while knowing the fierce loyalty he had commanded from his cast and crew on both of the first two films in the franchise.
Ultimately, both parties came to an agreement for Gunn to return and now he will write and direct ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ with a production and release date for the movie still to be determined.
