FOX has hired Academy Award nominated writer Drew Goddard to lead the ‘X-Force’ movie…
‘X-Force’ marks the spot.
FOX has officially hired Drew Goddard to write and direct the upcoming mutant spinoff ‘X-Force’ based on the comic book team first created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza in 1991.
Goddard is best known for his work writing the adaptation of ‘The Martian’, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for best adapted screenplay as well as developing the ‘Daredevil’ TV series for Netflix as well as writing episodes of ‘Lost’ and ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’.
On the directing front, Goddard has helmed movies such as ‘Cabin in the Woods’, which he also co-wrote with mentor Joss Whedon and several episodes of the TV series ‘The Good Place’.
Now Goddard will lead FOX’s latest spinoff in the ‘X-Men’ universe with the ‘X-Force’ film expected to center around lead characters Cable and Deadpool, played by Josh Brolin and Ryan Reynolds. The characters will first come together in ‘Deadpool 2’ due out on June 1 next year.
In the comics, ‘X-Force’ was a band of mutants put together by Cable with the specific goal of seeking out and destroying mutant terror groups. Unlike the X-Men, who wanted to protect humanity from rogue mutants, X-Force was an aggressive unit who sought out mutant terror cells such as the Mutant Liberation Front.
Over the years, X-Force underwent numerous lineup changes including a popular rebirth of the series titled ‘Uncanny X-Force’ led by Wolverine that also included Deadpool in the group.
There’s no telling at this point what group of mutants will make up the ‘X-Force’ unit for the movie outside of Cable and Deadpool but it’s likely that Domino (played by Zazie Beetz in ‘Deadpool 2’) will more than likely join the team as well.
The ‘X-Men’ universe will be very busy in 2018 with ‘X-Men: The New Mutants’ due out on April 13 followed by ‘Deadpool 2’ on June 1 and then finally ‘X-Men: The Dark Phoenix’ dropping on November 2.
