Get a first look at the cast from the upcoming movie “Dune” directed by Denis Villeneueve, which will tell the story of the epic novel by Frank Herbert…
Director Denis Villeneuve knew he had a difficult task ahead of him when he decided to tackle the adaptation of “Dune” into a new feature film for Warner Bros.
The epic science fiction story based on a 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert had been adapted previously — most famously in director David Lynch’s 1984 version, which was a critical flop at the time but went onto become something of a cult classic. A Syfy miniseries adaptation came out in 2000 but the sprawling nature of “Dune” felt better served as a feature film but it was going to take the right kind of filmmaker to bring it to life in the right way.
Villenueve ended up taking on the job with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth writing the script based on the original novel.
To truly tackle “Dune,” Villenueve knew there was no way to do justice to the book by trying to fit everything into one movie so Warner Bros. agreed to split the film into two parts in similar fashion to Stephen King’s sprawling horror novel “IT,” which was released as “Chapter 1” and “Chapter 2.”
“I would not agree to make this adaptation of the book with one single movie,” Villeneuve said when speaking to Vanity Fair. “The world is too complex. It’s a world that takes its power in details.”
The first installment of “Dune” will land in theaters on December 18 with a massive cast featured in the sci-fi movie including Timothée Chalamet Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa and Javier Bardem.
Here’s the official synopsis for “Dune” from Warner Bros:
“A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides (Chalamet), a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence — a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential — only those who can conquer their fear will survive.”
