The story from “Dune” will continue with an official sequel that’s been greenlit with the movie set to open in 2023…
“Dune: Part Two” is officially on the way.
Following a successful opening weekend for the ambitious science-fiction film from Oscar nominated director Denis Villeneueve, Legendary Pictures officially announced the sequel with “Dune: Part Two” currently scheduled to land in theaters in October 2023.
This is only the beginning…

While the opening moments of “Dune” actually reveal the title as “Dune: Part One,” a sequel hadn’t actually been ordered yet despite the adaptation of the classic 1965 novel by Frank Herbert only telling half the story in the first film.
The movie opened this past weekend while earning an impressive $41 million at the box office with another $223 million already earned globally. Of course, “Dune” also landed on HBO Max on the same day as part of Warner Bros. strategy for all films being released in 2021 due to the global pandemic.
“Dune” was a massive undertaking by Legendary with a huge cast filled with ‘A’ list talent not to mention the effects heavy story that involves a battle for supremacy between warring houses in a science-fiction epic that has influenced hundreds of books, films and television shows including the “Star Wars” franchise as well as ‘Game of Thrones.”
“I just received news from Legendary that we are officially moving forward with Dune: Part Two,” Villeneueve said in a statement. “It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune, and I have the fans, the cast, and crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. to thank for supporting this dream. This is only the beginning.”
Many members of the cast expressed their excitement over the announcement that “Dune: Part Two” was going to go into production now that the sequel has been ordered.

It’s unknown at this time how many cast members from the first “Dune” film will return — there are more than a few notable deaths in the movie — but it appears everybody expected to play a part in the sequel are on board to come back.
There’s already Oscar buzz surrounding “Dune” and we called it potentially the best film of 2021 in our review after the movie opened.
“Dune” is still available in theaters and HBO Max right now.
