Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson made an appearance at DC FanDome where he teased his upcoming “Black Adam” movie along with some news about who will be joining him in the film…
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is champing at the bit to begin production on his highly anticipated “Black Adam” movie but the box office superstar still managed to reveal a few new things about the film during DC FanDome on Saturday.
The panel opened with an animated origin story illustrated by the great Jim Lee and Bosslogic as they detailed how Black Adam came into existence after he was originally a slave. After gaining tremendous powers that rival every hero in the history of the DC Universe, Black Adam was imprisoned before finally being unleashed 5,000 years later.
When Black Adam arrives in the DC Film universe, he won’t be a hero and he’s not exactly a villain, which makes this particular character such an interesting addition to the line up.
“One of the things I always admired about him is he’s an anti-hero,” Johnson said about ‘Black Adam.’ “I love that he doesn’t walk the line and has his own sense of Black Adam justice and I love that his origins are that of a slave — his people were enslaved and his family was enslaved … he felt the burden and pressures of a larger entity holding him down. When you come from that place, there’s a different energy … which informs how Black Adam operates.
“We know he’s one of the most powerful [characters] in the DC universe,” Johnson added, “but [superheroes] have to exhibit a bit of restraint when those are opposing them. But this idea that you can take all of Black Adam’s powers and he does not practice restraint — that makes for a powerful combination, one that’s explosive and very dangerous and, to me, very likable. He is a ruthless keeper of justice.”
In addition to Johnson’s origin story being teased during the panel, he also revealed at least part of the line up of heroes who will join the “Black Adam” movie as they introduced the Justice Society of America.
The team includes Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Cyclone, and Atom Smasher (who will be played by Noah Centineo) — with the rest of the casting for the team still to be determined at a later date.
Considering Black Adam has been one of Shazam’s greatest enemies in the comic books, it will be interesting to see if Johnson’s character will cross paths with Zachary Levi at some point during the movie — or at least in a post credits scene.
Because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, there’s no exact start date for filming on “Black Adam” but it certainly seems like Johnson is anxious to get to work.
