A new “Evil Dead” sequel is currently in the works from New Line Cinema with the latest installment in the iconic horror franchise expected to land exclusively on HBO Max.
The latest sequel will be titled “Evil Dead Rise” with original “Evil Dead” creator and director Sam Raimi on board as an executive producer for the film. Raimi was the man behind the camera for all three of the original “Evil Dead” movies including “Evil Dead 2” and “Army of Darkness.”
The “Evil Dead” trilogy starred Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams — the main protagonist all of the previous movies — and while he’s coming back as a producer for the film, he’ll be handing off the starring duties to a new set of actors.
Campbell last appeared as Ash in the Starz series “Ash vs. Evil Dead” but this new film is not expected to tie into that show.
This time around, “Evil Dead Rise” will center around “two estranged sisters, portrayed by Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.”
“At its core, ‘Evil Dead’ is about ordinary people overcoming extraordinarily terrifying situations,” Campbell said about the new sequel. “I can’t wait for Alyssa and Lily to fill the blood-soaked shoes of those who have come before them and carry on that tradition.”
Filming on “Evil Dead Rise” is expected to start next week in New Zealand.
There’s no word yet when the film might arrive on HBO Max but part of the deal with production is that the newest “Evil Dead” movie will be exclusive to the streaming service and will not debut in theaters.
